This miniature portrait has a note on the reverse saying; "Miniature by Sir William Charles Ross. Inside the frame is a piece of the original backing upon which is written in old fashioned writing; Jane, Lady St John Mildmay, by Sir Wm Ross Knt". Research has located her as Jane Mildmay (b. c1765-6 May 1857), who married Sir Henry Paulet St John-Mildmay (30 Sep 1764-11 Nov 1808), on 22 June 1786.
From mildmay it appears that Jane Mildmay was an heiress and when she married Sir Henry his surname was Sir Henry Paulet St John, but he added Mildmay to it in 1790.
It also appears that a large oil on canvas painting of Lady Jane Mildmay, in a white silk dress and playing the harp (50 ins x 40 ins) by John Francis Rigaud (1742-1810) and dated 1785, was sold by Christie's New York on 26 Jan 2005 as lot 271 for USD 84,000 compared to an estimate of USD 20,000-30,000 - see Portrait Of Lady Jane Mildmay, Seated Three-qua... . 98
